Molybdenum history In ancient times a number of substances were collectively known by the Greek word ‘molybdos,’ meaning lead-like. Molybdenite (MoS 2 ), the most abundant molybdenum-containing mineral, was in this class along with lead, galena, graphite and others.
History and Uses: Molybdenum was discovered by Carl Welhelm Scheele, a Swedish chemist, in 1778 in a mineral known as molybdenite (MoS 2) which had been confused as a lead compound. Molybdenum was isolated by Peter Jacob Hjelm in 1781. Today, most molybdenum is obtained from molybdenite, wulfenite (PbMoO 4) and powellite (CaMoO 4).
Although molybdenum was discovered in the late 18th century, it was used early before its discovery. For example, in the 14th century, Japan used a molybdenum-containing steel to make a saber. In the 16th century, molybdenite was used as graphite because it was similar to the appearance and properties of lead, galena, and graphite.
In 1778 Carl Welhelm Scheele conducted research on an ore now known as molybdenite. He concluded that it did not contain lead as was suspected at the time and reported that the mineral contained a new element that he called molybdenum after the mineral. Molybdenum metal was prepared in an impure form in 1782 by Peter Jacob Hjelm.
Molybdenum metal was isolated and proven to be a new element in 1790 by . Hjelm, drawing on the earlier work of Scheele. In the 1800s, molybdenum was used primarily in dyes and the preparation of certain chemical compounds, but little else was done with it.
